Spring 2025 Issue,
Matt Green

In our Spring 2025 issue, TikTok star Matt Green, known to millions as "The Rapping Science Teacher," opens up about the moment a car driving by blasting music turned into a teaching method, why representation shaped his own path into science, and what it's like reaching more students through rap than he ever could from the front of a classroom.

"I realized I knew all the lyrics without even trying," Matt tells STEM Crew, on the spark behind his first science rap. "That got me thinking, if I could remember song lyrics so easily, what if those lyrics were about science? That was the spark."

He's candid about why it works: "We remember patterns and rhythms, even if we don't fully understand the science behind why. If you try to memorize a random list of words, it's tough. But if there's a melody or rhythm, it sticks."

And on representation: "Growing up as a mixed-race kid, I rarely saw mixed-race or Black scientists on TV. The more you see yourself reflected in a field, the more you believe it's possible."

Matt is the kind of teacher who makes you want to turn up the volume on learning, and this conversation captures exactly why.
